This book defies the trap of most second books (and don't get me started on movies) are good, but not as good as the first. For most second books the tension is gone, you know the characters, not much discovery left. Not with this book. You follow Alex as he grows, as he discovers things about himself and the ones he cares about that he never knew. This is not some doe-eyed lead where everything in his life goes perfectly. Neither is it one of those constant struggle books where seemly crazier and crazier things happen to "keep the story up". In this book we move back and forth as Alex learns about himself, travels to learn about the one he loved & lost, and discovers things about his friends and family he never knew. All the while he discovers and builds out what kind of young man he will be. A great reminder for adults about the struggles and joys of teenage years, and a bit of insight for teenagers now. I shared this book with a number of adults and teenagers and all have loved it!
More self discovery and struggle in 1970's Chicago. A great read!

The Circle Squared Circulatim Volume 2 Ray Smith 9781492993896 Books Reviews
A 5-Star rating for THE CIRCLE SQUARED by Ray Smith. Strongly recommended that you read the first book in this series before reading the sequel.
Alex experiences his "Dark night of the soul" as his world changes around him. As most teen age boys, Alex deals with changes that are stressful and scary. His stress is compounded by rocky relationships, Toby's death and his own mortality. As Alex's body heals, his pessimistic obsessive thoughts are magnified by his intelligence and experiences. Ray Smith provides the reader a troubling perspective into Alex's neurosis as it builds to what Alex believes will be a complete breakdown. As Alex experiences tremendous opportunity, his self-defeating behavior is sabotaging him. Readers will find Alex's experiences to be uncomfortable and frustrating. Personally, I wanted to reach into the story and shake him out of his downward spiral.
I highly recommend THE CIRCLE SQUARED to readers who have first read THE CIRCLE. This second book takes the reader into a darker place. Both novels are detailed and provide the reader with insight into Alex's experiences as a 16 year old intelligent and gifted boy. Given Alex's obsessive thoughts and the evolving description of his nightly demons, patience is needed to observe the subtle changes in them that lead him towards what he feels will be his loss of sanity. As mentioned, his progressive neurosis is not easy to watch in juxtaposition to his evolving self-image and how others view him.
This series delivers far beyond the level of writing that one expects within the coming-of-age genera. With the time period of the early 1980s, this series is more appealing to me, having experienced this era, than it may be to younger reading.
With an extensive list of characters and the numerous threads to the storyline, attentive readers who enjoy complexity will find this series of novels enjoyable and rewarding. Consequently, readers looking for some light, entertaining reading with straight forward storylines best look to other novels.
Personally, I enjoyed the story as I also over think and analyze situations. I could identify with many of Alex's challenges. I am troubled by some elements of the story, but they directly relate to his escalating situation and his self-destructive behavior. I especially like how Ray Smith creates characters that are three dimensional and spends the time to describe them in detail. Knowing these characters, I will miss them as I wait for the third book in this series. It is the type of story you just don't want to end.
This book defies the trap of most second books (and don't get me started on movies) are good, but not as good as the first. For most second books the tension is gone, you know the characters, not much discovery left.
